The world doesn’t wait for you to feel "ready." It doesn’t pause while you hit the snooze button for the third time, and it certainly doesn’t care if your inbox is already overflowing by 8:00 AM. If you are leading a team, a company, or just trying to navigate the complexities of a high-performance life, the gap between where you are and where you want to be isn’t a lack of information… it’s a lack of execution.
Most executives spend their mornings in "reaction mode." They wake up to the chime of a smartphone, immediately dive into emails, and spend the rest of the day putting out fires. They are surviving, not thriving. But as a Veteran who has spent over two decades in the Air Force, I can tell you that the battle is won or lost before the sun even peaks over the horizon.
To reclaim your executive edge, you have to step into the Role Model Mindset. This isn't about "hustling harder" or toxic positivity; it’s about foundational self-building. It’s about deciding that the excellent version of yourself: the one capable of leading with clarity and authority: deserves a head start.
Here is how you make the Shyft.
1. The Pre-Shyft: Execute the Night Before
You can’t master your morning if you haven’t mastered the night that preceded it. High-level leadership requires strategic foresight, and that starts with your "Pre-Shyft" routine.
Stop treating your sleep as an afterthought. For the high-performer, rest is a weapon. When you prepare for the next day before you hit the pillow, you remove the "decision fatigue" that plagues most leaders the moment they open their eyes.
- Audit Your Priorities: Identify your top three "Greatest Impact Activities" for tomorrow. Not the urgent stuff: the strategic stuff.
- Remove Friction: Lay out your clothes. Prep your water. Set the environment.
- The Brain Dump: Get the lingering tasks out of your head and onto paper so your subconscious can rest.
By doing this, you aren't waking up to a list of questions; you’re waking up to a mission. You are already in the Role Model Mindset because you’ve taken ownership of your time before the world has a chance to demand it.

2. The 4:44 AM Non-Negotiable
Why 4:44 AM? Because while the rest of the world is sleeping, the leaders are refining.
There is a specific kind of clarity that exists in the early hours. It’s a quiet authority. When you wake up at 4:44 AM, you aren't just getting a jump on the day; you are proving to yourself that you are the one in control. This is the ultimate act of self-leadership.
As a Veteran, I learned early on that discipline equals freedom. If you wait until 7:00 AM to start your day, you are already behind. You are reacting to the noise. But when you own the 4:44 AM window, you create a sanctuary for your own growth.
During this hour, your phone stays on "Do Not Disturb." No emails. No news. No social media. This is your time to Regulate. You are grounding yourself in your "Y Factor": the reason you do what you do: before you step into the arena.
3. The 34 Minute Mindful Method
If you want to live in the potential you know you are capable of, you have to treat your body like the high-performance machine it is. You cannot lead an organization if you cannot lead yourself through a workout.
This is where my 34 Minute Mindful Method comes into play. Most leaders claim they don’t have time for wellness. I’m here to tell you that’s a lie you’re telling yourself to stay comfortable. 34 minutes is all it takes to switch your brain and body "on."
- Move with Purpose: Whether it’s a high-intensity session or tactical stretching, movement is the catalyst for cognitive performance.
- Hydrate Immediately: Flush out the toxins and wake up your internal systems.
- The 34 Minute Commitment: This isn't about perfection; it’s about consistency. It’s the minimum non-negotiable commitment to your physical and mental well-being.
When you prioritize your body, you are building the resilience needed to handle the high-pressure decisions that wait for you in the boardroom. You are moving from Regulate to Rebuild.

4. Prime Your Identity: Regulate → Rebuild → Rise
Once your body is awake, it’s time to prime your mind. This is where the Shyft happens: the "Y" represents YOU and YOUR WHY.
Most executives are so focused on what they are doing that they forget who they are being. If your identity is tied solely to your job title, you are vulnerable. To have a true executive edge, you must build an unshakable foundation of self-love and self-building.
Spend 15 minutes on mindset work that isn't "woo," but tactical:
- Review Your Vision: Who is the version of you that has already achieved your 5-year goals? How do they walk? How do they speak? How do they lead?
- Visualization: Mentally rehearse the hardest conversation or most complex meeting you have today. See yourself navigating it with grounded authority.
- Gratitude for the Battle: Be grateful for the challenges, because they are the raw material for your growth.
This is how you Rise. You aren't just another executive; you are a leader who operates from a place of alignment and purpose. If you're feeling out of sync, take the Life Alignment Quiz to see where the gaps are.
5. Tackle Your "Greatest Impact Activity" (GIA)
The final step to mastering your morning is to do the hard work first. Before the meetings start, before the staff arrives, and before the "urgent" distractions take over: execute your GIA.
Your GIA is the one task that, when completed, makes everything else easier or unnecessary. It’s the strategic planning, the deep-work project, or the difficult decision you’ve been putting off.
By completing this before 7:30 AM, you have already won the day. You are no longer chasing the clock; you are leading it. This builds a massive reservoir of confidence that carries you through the afternoon slump. You’ve stepped into the excellent version of yourself, and your team will feel that energy the moment you walk through the door.

Stop Surviving, Start Thriving
Leadership isn't a rank; it's a responsibility. And the first person you are responsible for is the one looking back at you in the mirror.
The 4:44 AM routine isn't a punishment: it’s a privilege. It’s the space where you rebuild your identity and reclaim your edge. You have the inherent capacity for excellence… but you have to choose to step into it every single morning.
Are you ready to stop making excuses and start making the Shyft? The excellent version of you is waiting.
Master Your Morning FAQ
Why 4:44 AM specifically?
It’s not a magic number, but it is a psychological marker. It represents a commitment to rising before the world's demands begin. It provides a significant window of uninterrupted time for self-leadership and strategic thinking.
What if I’m not a "morning person"?
"Morning person" is a label, not a biological destiny. As leaders, we do what is necessary, not just what is comfortable. Start by shifting your wake-up time back by 15 minutes every few days until you hit your target.
Can I do the 34 Minute Mindful Method later in the day?
You can, but doing it in the morning ensures it actually happens. Leaders who prioritize their wellness first thing in the morning report higher energy levels and better emotional regulation throughout the entire day.
