The boardroom goes silent. Every eye is fixed on you. The quarterly projections just tanked, a key partner walked, or the market shifted overnight. In that split second, your heart rate spikes, your vision narrows, and the "firefighter" inside you wants to start spraying water on every spark you see.
But here is the truth: Firefighters manage crises. Leaders master the Shyft.
Most executives fail under pressure not because they lack the intelligence or the data, but because they lack the Tactical Pivot. They are so busy reacting to the noise that they forget they are the signal. If you want to lead at the highest level: the level you know you are capable of: you have to stop managing the chaos and start leading through it.
The Identity of the Executive Under Fire
When the pressure hits, your first instinct is usually tactical. You want to fix the problem. You want to execute the plan. You want to win the day. That is the operator’s mindset. It’s what got you here, but it’s not what will get you there.
As a Veteran and a former professional athlete, I know what it feels like to have seconds to make a decision that changes everything. In the military, a tactical pivot is a maneuver executed in response to a changing battlefield. It’s not a retreat. It’s a repositioning for a more advantageous strike.
In leadership, the Tactical Pivot is a mindset Shyft. It’s the moment you stop looking at the problem and start looking at the version of yourself required to solve it. This is where the Role Model Mindset becomes your greatest asset. Are you the leader who panics, or are you the leader who regulates?

Regulate → Rebuild → Rise
You cannot think clearly if your body is in a state of high-alert survival. This is why I focus so heavily on the Body Pillar in my coaching. If your nervous system is shot, your decision-making is compromised.
1. Regulate
The first step of a Tactical Pivot is physiological. You have to regulate your response to the pressure. This isn't about deep breathing in the middle of a meeting (though that helps); it’s about having the foundational self-building in place so that your baseline is "Ready."
When you prioritize your physical and mental wellness: through methods like my 34 Minute Mindful Method: you build a reservoir of resilience. You don't have to "find" calm under pressure; you bring the calm with you.
2. Rebuild
Once you’ve regulated the physical response, you rebuild the narrative. The Tactical Pivot requires you to ask: What is the Shyft that needs to happen here?
Is it a Shyft in strategy? A Shyft in communication? Or a Shyft in your own Identity? Often, the pressure is a signal that your old way of leading has reached its limit. It’s time to step into the more excellent version of yourself. This is where we look at your Life Alignment and see where the cracks are forming.
3. Rise
Finally, you Rise. You execute the pivot with authority. You don’t ask for permission to lead; you take ownership. This is the Role Model Mindset in action. You are leading yourself first, which gives everyone else in the room the permission and the roadmap to follow suit.
The Y Factor: Why Your "Shyft" Matters
I spell it "Shyft" with a "Y" for a reason. It’s about YOU and YOUR WHY.
In the heat of executive pressure, it’s easy to lose your "Why." You get caught up in KPIs, bottom lines, and stakeholder demands. But the most powerful leaders are those who stay anchored in their purpose. When you know your "Why," a tactical change isn't a threat: it’s just another move on the board.
If you’re feeling like you’re constantly firefighting, it’s time to check your alignment. Are you living in the potential you know you are capable of, or are you just surviving the day-to-day? Taking the Life Alignment Quiz is often the first step my clients take to realize where they’ve drifted from their highest version.

Navigating the Noise
Executive leadership is noisy. There are a thousand voices telling you what you "should" do. The Tactical Pivot is about silencing that noise and listening to the expert within.
This isn't about "toxic positivity" or "woo-woo" affirmations. This is tactical luxury. It’s the sophisticated, grounded authority of a leader who knows exactly who they are and what they bring to the table.
When you make a Tactical Pivot, you aren't just changing a business plan. You are changing the energy of the entire organization. You are demonstrating that pressure doesn't break you: it refines you.
Taking Ownership of the Shyft
The truth is, many leaders are afraid to pivot because they fear looking like they don’t have the answers. But real authority comes from the ability to say, "The terrain has changed, and so will we."
That is the Role Model Mindset. It’s foundational self-building. It’s about being the person who others look to and say, "That is how you handle the heat."
If you are ready to stop reacting and start leading: if you are ready to step into that excellent version of yourself that you’ve been catching glimpses of: it’s time for a Shyft.
I don't work with everyone. I work with the ready. I work with the leaders who are tired of the "hustle" and ready for the "rise." Whether it's through Executive Coaching or joining our Free THRIVE Community, the path to your highest self starts with a single, tactical decision to take ownership.
