It’s 4:44 PM. You’ve been at it since sunrise. Your coffee has long since worn off, your inbox is still screaming, and that heavy, afternoon brain fog is settling in like a thick coastal mist.
Most people see this time of day: 16:44 in military time: as the beginning of the end. They start checking out. They "white knuckle" it through the last hour, scrolling mindlessly through socials, or they just surrender to the slump and pray for 5:00 PM to arrive.
But as a high performer, you don’t just "wait for the clock." You take ownership.
As a Veteran, I’ve learned that the final stretch of any mission is often the most critical. It’s where mistakes happen because of fatigue, but it’s also where leaders are made. Stepping into the excellent version of yourself means learning how to Shyft your energy when the rest of the world is folding.
This isn’t about "hustling harder" or drinking another espresso. It’s about a tactical 5-minute protocol designed to help you Regulate, Rebuild, and Rise.
Let’s break down the 16:44 Afternoon Performance Reset.
Why 16:44? The Power of the Tactical Anchor
In the military, precision matters. When we talk about 16:44, it’s a specific, symbolic anchor. It’s the transition point. For many, it’s the bridge between "Work You" and "Home You."
If you carry the stress, the frantic energy, and the unfinished loops of your workday into your evening, you aren't living in your potential. You’re just surviving. The Role Model Mindset demands that you show up for your family, your health, and your personal growth with the same excellence you bring to the boardroom.
To do that, you need to clear the slate. You need a Shyft.

Minute 1: Regulate – The Nervous System Reset
The first step in any performance reset is addressing your biology. You cannot think your way out of a physiological slump. When you’re stressed or tired, your nervous system is often stuck in a "fight or flight" loop or a "freeze" state.
We start by regulating the system.
The Tactical Breath:
Forget the "woo-woo" breathing exercises. We’re going for physiological efficiency.
- Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds. Focus on your belly expanding, not your chest.
- Hold for 2 seconds. Feel the stillness.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6-8 seconds. Imagine you’re blowing through a straw.
This slow exhale signals to your brain that the "threat" is over. It lowers your heart rate and moves you back into your prefrontal cortex: the part of your brain responsible for executive function and decision-making.
One minute of focused breathing is enough to recalibrate your baseline. You aren't just "relaxing"; you are strategically lowering the noise so you can hear your own intuition again. This is a core component of the 34 Minute Mindful Method, where we prioritize the foundational daily disciplines that compound into extraordinary results.
Minutes 2-3: Rebuild – Somatic Movement and Tactile Input
Now that your nervous system is regulated, we need to wake up the body. Your body "keeps the score," and sitting at a desk for eight hours creates physical stagnation that mirrors mental stagnation.
As someone who spent 22 years in the Air Force and overcame a cancer diagnosis that left me in a wheelchair for six months, I know that movement is medicine. But it doesn’t always mean a 60-minute HIIT session. In the 16:44 Reset, we use somatic input to "turn the lights back on."
The 2-Minute Wake-Up:
- Zone 1 Activation: Firmly rub your knuckles along your hip flexors and the base of your skull. These are high-tension areas. This tactile input tells your brain exactly where your body is in space, breaking the "numbness" of the afternoon slump.
- The Power Stand: Stand up. Reach your arms toward the ceiling, then hinge at the hips and reach for your toes. Feel the blood flow back into your posterior chain.
- The March: March in place for 30 seconds, bringing your knees high. This cross-body movement engages both hemispheres of the brain.
This isn't about burning calories. It's about rebuilding your physical presence. You are reclaiming your space.

Minutes 4-5: Rise – Mental Intention and the Y Factor
The final two minutes are the most important. This is where you decide who you are going to be for the rest of the day.
In my Life Alignment Assessment, I often see leaders who are "successful" on paper but completely unaligned in their purpose. They are winning at work but losing at life. The "Rise" phase of the 16:44 Reset ensures you don't fall into that trap.
The Mental Shyft:
Ask yourself these three tactical questions:
- What is the one "Must-Win" left for today? Don't look at the whole list. Pick the one task that, if finished, allows you to close your laptop with a sense of pride.
- What am I leaving here? Mentally visualize placing your work stress, that annoying email, or that unfinished project into a box. It will be there tomorrow. You don't need to carry it into your kitchen or your gym.
- Who does my family/future self need me to be right now? This is the Y Factor. Why are you doing all of this? If you’re working this hard to build a legacy, don't let that legacy receive a depleted, cranky version of you at 5:30 PM.
By answering these, you are stepping into the excellent version of yourself. You are no longer reacting to the day; you are leading it.
The Role Model Mindset in Action
Creating a performance reset isn't a "nice to have": it’s a requirement for sustainable leadership. When you take these five minutes at 16:44, you are practicing self-leadership. You are proving to yourself that you have the power to change your state at any moment.
I call this "Rewriting in Real Time."
You might have had a terrible morning. You might have received bad news at noon. It doesn't matter. The 16:44 Reset is your opportunity to Shyft. It’s the moment you decide that the "potential you know you are capable of" isn't just a dream: it's a choice you make every single afternoon.
If you find that your afternoons are consistently draining, it might be time to look deeper at your overall alignment. We often try to fix the symptoms (fatigue, lack of focus) without addressing the root cause (identity and purpose).
Whether you are a corporate executive or a Veteran transitioning into civilian leadership, the foundational work is the same. You have to build the person capable of creating the life you want.

Ready to Shyft Your Life?
The 16:44 Reset is just one tool in a much larger kit. If you’re ready to stop surviving and start living in the excellence you know you’re built for, I invite you to take the next step.
Stop settling for "fine." Stop letting your energy be dictated by your inbox. It’s time to regulate your system, rebuild your foundation, and rise into your purpose.
