7 Mistakes You’re Making with Stress Management (and How to Build Real Resilience)

Do you ever feel like you’re running a marathon that has no finish line? You wake up, your phone is already buzzing with "urgent" emails, your calendar looks like a game of Tetris gone wrong, and by 2:00 PM, you’re on your fourth cup of coffee just to stay upright. We’ve all been there! But here’s the thing: most of us are trying to "manage" our stress in ways that actually make us more stressed.

Wait, what? How is that possible?

It’s because we’ve been taught that stress management is about bubble baths and occasional vacations. But for high-performers like you, the CEOs, the leaders, the parents who do it all, that just doesn't cut it. Real resilience isn't about escaping your life; it’s about building a life you don’t need to escape from!

Let’s dive into the seven mistakes that are keeping you stuck in survival mode and, more importantly, how we can flip the script together.

1. Falling Into the Perfectionism Trap

You might think your high standards are your greatest strength. And they are… until they aren't. When perfectionism takes over, every minor setback feels like a personal failure. You spend hours obsessing over a single slide in a deck or replaying a conversation in your head long after it’s over.

But guess what? That constant "on" state is frying your nervous system! Perfectionism is often just a fancy suit that imposter syndrome wears. You’re working twice as hard because you’re afraid if you stop, everyone will see you aren't "enough."

The Fix: Shift from perfection to progress. In my Executive Coaching sessions, we work on the "Core" of the Freedom Formula, identifying your true value so you don't have to prove it every single minute. And if you’re ready to take that next step, you can book here.

2. Thinking Four Hours of Sleep is a "Flex"

I see it all the time in the corporate world: the "hustle" culture badge of honor for staying up until 2:00 AM and being back at it by 6:00 AM. Stop it!

When you’re sleep-deprived, your brain can’t regulate emotions. You become more reactive, less creative, and, honestly, a little harder to work with. Research shows that exhausted leaders are triggered by the most mundane events. If you want to lead with excellence, you have to fuel the machine.

The Fix: Prioritize recovery as much as you prioritize your KPIs. Real resilience starts with a rested mind. Let’s make getting 7-8 hours a non-negotiable part of your leadership strategy.

3. The "Busy" Trap: Failing to Delegate

Are you the bottleneck in your own business? If you feel like you have to do everything yourself to "ensure it’s done right," you aren't managing stress, you’re creating it. High-performing leaders often struggle with delegation because they have an avoidant attachment to their work; they don't trust anyone else to hold the reins.

The Fix: Paint a clear target. Resilience isn't about carrying the whole world on your shoulders; it’s about building a team you can trust. Check out my Leadership Training workshops to learn how to empower your team so you can finally breathe.

4. Avoiding Your Own Wellness Resources

It’s ironic, right? You implement wellness programs for your employees, you advocate for mental health, but when was the last time you took a personal day? When was the last time you used that gym membership you pay for?

If you aren't using the resources you provide, you’re telling your team (and yourself) that "wellness is for people who aren't as important/busy as I am." That’s a fast track to burnout city.

The Fix: Lead by example! Join one of my Crews Beyond Limits classes. When your team sees you prioritizing your health, they’ll feel empowered to do the same.

5. Suppressing Your Emotions (Strength Isn’t Silence)

We’ve been told that being a "strong" leader means being stoic. But suppressing your emotions doesn't make them go away, it just makes them come out sideways as irritability, anxiety, or physical pain.

So naturally, we try to "power through." But real resilience requires emotional intelligence. You have to be able to name what you’re feeling to tame it.

The Fix: Incorporate somatic practices. As a somatic coach, I help leaders connect with their bodies to release the physical tension that stress leaves behind. You don't have to carry it all.

6. Living Without Boundaries

Does your work bleed into your dinner? Does your phone sit on your nightstand like a ticking time bomb? Without boundaries, your home isn't a sanctuary, it’s just a satellite office.

When you don't have a "stop" time, your brain never enters the recovery phase. You’re always "simmering," which means it doesn't take much to make you boil over.

The Fix: Set a "Hard Stop" time. Use a Habit Tracker to hold yourself accountable to your off-hours. Your family (and your brain) will thank you!

7. Overcomplicating the Solution

The biggest mistake? Thinking that stress management has to be this huge, time-consuming ordeal. You think you need an hour of meditation, a 90-minute workout, and a silent retreat just to feel "okay." Who has time for that?!

When the solution feels too hard, we just don't do it.

The Fix: The 34-Minute Mindset. This is the heart of what I do. You don’t need hours: you just need 34 focused minutes a day for your mind, body, and spirit. It’s about small daily disciplines that compound into extraordinary results. Want to see where you are right now? Take the 23 Alignment Quiz and start building from a place of clarity.

How to Build Real Resilience: The Freedom Formula

So, how do we move from these mistakes into a reality where you feel energized and empowered? It’s all about the 5 C's of my Freedom Formula:

  1. Core: Get crystal clear on your identity and values.
  2. Confidence: Build the courage to show up as your authentic self, flaws and all.
  3. Consistency: This is where the 34-Minute Mindset lives. Small wins every single day.
  4. Community: Surround yourself with people who hold you to a higher standard (and pick you up when you fall). That’s exactly why I created the free THRIVE Community, so you have a space to stay encouraged, connected, and in motion.
  5. Celebration: Honoring your wins! We spend so much time looking at the mountain we haven't climbed that we forget to look back at how far we've come.
