The boardroom isn’t where you win. You win at 4:44 AM, in the silence of your own home, before the world starts demanding pieces of your soul.
If you’re waiting until your first meeting to "switch on," you’ve already lost the day. High-performance leadership isn't about working harder; it’s about becoming the person who handles the pressure with ease. It’s about the Role Model Mindset. As a Veteran, I learned early on that discipline isn't a cage: it’s the key to your freedom.
Most executives are living in a reactive loop. They wake up to an alarm, check their phone, and immediately let other people's priorities dictate their emotional state. That’s not leadership; that’s survival. To dominate the boardroom, you must first dominate yourself. You have to take ownership of your identity, your body, and your focus long before you step into that high-stakes environment.
Here is your easy guide to making the Shyft from a stressed executive to an empowered leader through five foundational steps.
1. The 4:44 AM Foundation: Own Your Identity
The most powerful thing you can do for your leadership is to wake up with intention. At 4:44 AM, there are no distractions. There are no emails, no pings from Slack, and no "urgent" fires to put out. This is your time to build the foundational version of yourself.
This isn't just about waking up early for the sake of it. It’s about self-trust. When you tell yourself you’re going to wake up at 4:44 AM and you actually do it, you’re proving to your subconscious that you are a person of your word. That internal integrity translates directly into how you lead your team. If you can’t lead yourself at five in the morning, how can you expect to lead a multi-million dollar organization at noon?
Step into the excellent version of yourself right here. Don't touch your phone. Don't look at the news. This first hour is for you to Regulate your energy and decide who you are going to be today. Are you a leader who reacts, or a leader who responds with authority?

2. Regulate Your Nervous System: The Mindset Mastery
Leadership is emotional intelligence in action. If your nervous system is fried, your decision-making will be too. Before you even think about your "to-do" list, you need to clear the mental clutter.
I call this the Regulate phase of the Regulate → Rebuild → Rise framework.
Spend the first 15–20 minutes of your morning in reflection. This could be meditation, breathwork, or prayer. The goal is to quiet the "noise" so you can hear your own intuition. Most executives suffer from "decision fatigue" because they are constantly bombarded. By starting your morning in stillness, you create a reservoir of calm that you can draw from during the afternoon's most heated boardroom debates.
Use this time to align with your Y Factor. Why are you doing this? If your "why" isn't clear, you’re just chasing numbers. When you Shyft your focus from the "what" to the "why," your leadership takes on a new level of grounded authority.
If you're feeling out of sync, I highly recommend taking my Life Alignment Quiz to see exactly where you need to recalibrate your focus.
3. Rebuild with the 34-Minute Mindful Method
Movement is a non-negotiable for high performance. As a former professional athlete, I know that your physical state dictates your mental state. You cannot lead at your highest potential if your body is failing you.
However, I also know that as an executive, you don't have two hours to spend at the gym every morning. This is why I developed the 34 Minute Mindful Method. It’s a targeted, high-intensity approach to fitness that bridges the gap between physical wellness and mental clarity.
In 34 minutes, you move your body, elevate your heart rate, and shake off the stagnation of the previous day. This isn't just about aesthetics: though looking like a leader certainly helps your presence. It’s about chemistry. Exercise releases the endorphins and dopamine you need to stay sharp, creative, and resilient.
When you prioritize your body, you’re telling yourself that you matter. Self-leadership starts with self-care. If you don't have 34 minutes for yourself, you don't have a life; you have a job. It’s time to take ownership of your health so you can show up with the energy required to drive organizational excellence.

4. Rise into Strategic Leadership: The Mental Priming
Once you have regulated your mind and rebuilt your energy, it’s time to Rise. This is where you transition from self-building to strategic planning.
Before you open your laptop, spend 15 minutes on "Deep Work." Identify the three "Big Rocks" for the day. These aren't just tasks; they are the strategic moves that will actually move the needle for your company. Most executives waste their best brainpower on low-value emails. By doing your strategic thinking at 5:45 AM, you’re operating at a level of clarity that your competitors (who are still hitting snooze) can’t touch.
Review your calendar and mentally rehearse your key meetings. Who do you need to be in that 10:00 AM briefing? How do you want your team to feel after speaking with you? This kind of mental priming is what separates "bosses" from "Role Models." You aren't just showing up; you are intentionally creating an environment of excellence.
If you want to take this further, our C-Suite Executive Coaching programs focus specifically on this kind of high-level strategic alignment.
5. Connection and Purpose: The Final Shyft
The final step in owning your morning is connecting your actions to your larger purpose. Leadership can be lonely, and it’s easy to get lost in the spreadsheets and the bottom lines.
Before you transition into the "reactive" part of your day, take five minutes to connect. This could be a quick text to your spouse, a voice note of appreciation to a key team member, or a moment of gratitude for the life you’ve built. This grounds your leadership in humanity.
A leader who is connected to their purpose and their people is a leader who is unshakeable. When you walk into that boardroom, you aren't just there to win an argument; you’re there to fulfill a mission. This perspective gives you a level of confidence and poise that commands the room without you having to say a word.
Remember, you are living in the potential you know you are capable of. Don't settle for "good enough" when excellence is within your grasp.
