7 Mistakes You’re Making with Your Work-Life Balance (and How to Fix Them)

Let’s get real for a second. How many times have you told your team to "unplug and recharge" while you’re simultaneously firing off emails at 11:30 PM on a Saturday?

If you just felt a tiny pang of guilt, you’re in the right place.

As a Veteran, a former professional athlete, and an executive coach, I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen high-performers crumble because they thought "balance" was a dirty word. They thought that to lead at the highest level, they had to sacrifice every ounce of their personal well-being.

But here’s the truth: Shyft Happens™. Life doesn't wait for you to finish your slide deck. And if you aren't prepared to navigate the crossroads of change, you aren't leading, you’re just surviving.

In my world, we don’t just "shift" gears. We Shyft. Why the "Y"? Because it represents YOU. It represents YOUR WHY. Every transformation starts with the individual at the center. If you aren't right, nothing else will be.

Are you ready to stop the burnout cycle? Let’s dive into the 7 biggest mistakes leaders make with their work-life balance and, more importantly, how to fix them right now.

1. You’re Glorifying the "Always On" Hustle

This is the biggest Identity Shyft mistake I see. You’ve built your entire identity around being the person who "gets it done," no matter the cost. You think being reachable 24/7 is a badge of honor.

The Reality: In 2026, constant availability isn't a sign of commitment; it’s a sign of poor boundaries. When you are "always on," your brain never enters the "Regulate" phase. You are perpetually in a state of high-alert, which fries your decision-making capabilities.

The Fix: Implement the "Right to Disconnect." Stop rewarding late-night heroics. Start modeling what it looks like to be fully present in your personal life. If you’re working odd hours because that’s what works for your schedule, use the "send later" feature on your emails. Don’t force your team into your timeline.

2. You’re Neglecting Your Nervous System (The Body Shyft)

You think you can out-hustle a dysregulated nervous system. You drink another espresso, push through the brain fog, and wonder why you’re snappy in the boardroom and exhausted at the dinner table.

The Reality: This is a Body Shyft issue. Your body is the vessel for your leadership. If your nervous system is stuck in "fight or flight," you cannot access high-level strategic thinking.

The Fix: You need to Regulate → Rebuild → Rise. It starts with my 34-minute mindset. You don't need two hours in the gym to reset. You need intentional, somatic movement and breathwork that signals to your body that it is safe. When you regulate your system, you rebuild your capacity to lead.

3. You Have "Swiss Cheese" Boundaries

Your boundaries have more holes in them than a block of Leerdammer. You say "no" to a meeting, but then you "just check" your Slack notifications during your daughter’s soccer game.

The Reality: Leadership Shyfts require tactical wisdom. If you can't hold a boundary with yourself, how can you expect your organization to respect your time? Weak boundaries create a culture of interruption.

The Fix: Treat your personal time like a Board Meeting. You wouldn't let a random ping interrupt a meeting with the CEO, right? So why let it interrupt your recovery time? Use "The Shyft Zone", dedicated blocks of time where you are either 100% "on" or 100% "off." No middle ground. No leaking.

4. You’re Confusing Presence with Productivity

Still stuck in the old-school mindset that "bums in seats" equals work being done? Or worse, do you feel like you have to be seen online to prove you’re working?

The Reality: This is a Purpose Shyft trap. You’re focusing on the activity rather than the alignment. True leadership isn't about how many hours you log; it’s about the impact you create and the clarity you provide.

The Fix: Shift your metrics. Start measuring outcomes, not hours. Ask yourself: "Is this task moving the needle on my 'Y Factor'?" If the answer is no, delegate it or delete it. If you're struggling to figure out where your time is going, take my Life Alignment Assessment to see where you're out of sync.

5. You’re Ignoring the "Y" in the Shyft

You’ve climbed the ladder, you’ve got the title, but you feel… empty. You’re working harder than ever, but it feels like you’re running on a treadmill that’s going nowhere.

The Reality: You’ve lost touch with your purpose. When life forces a transformation: whether it’s a career change, a divorce, or just a mid-life realization: most people panic. They try to "shift" back to what they knew.

The Fix: Navigate the Shyft. The "Y" is You. What is your actual "Why" for doing this work? If your work-life balance is non-existent because you're trying to fulfill someone else's definition of success, you will never find peace. It’s time to Rewrite in Real Time. 6. You’re Trying to "Power Through" Burnout

You see the warning signs: the irritability, the lack of sleep, the feeling of "When Shyft Hits the Fan": and you decide to just "tough it out."

The Reality: As a Veteran, I know all about mental toughness. But real toughness isn't about breaking yourself; it’s about resilience. Resilience requires recovery. You cannot pour from an empty cup, and you certainly can't lead a team to victory if you're hallucinating from exhaustion.

The Fix: Get tactical about your recovery. This is where Executive Coaching comes in. You need a strategist who can help you identify the "leakage" in your energy and help you build a sustainable high-performance lifestyle.

7. You’re Operating in Isolation

You think that because you’re at the top, you have to have all the answers. You don't want to show "weakness" by admitting you’re struggling with the juggle.

The Reality: This is the fastest way to hit a wall. Isolation breeds stagnation. Every great leader I know has a tribe and a coach. You need people who speak the language of "Shyft" and can hold you accountable to your own well-being.

The Fix: Stop trying to do it alone. Join a community of like-minded high-achievers who are also navigating their own Shyfts. Our Free THRIVE community is the perfect place to start. Surround yourself with people who will challenge your excuses and celebrate your wins: especially the wins that happen outside of the office.
