It’s 2:14 PM. You’ve had your lunch. You’ve answered fifty emails. And suddenly… the fog rolls in. Your eyes feel heavy. Your brain feels like it’s wading through wet concrete. You reach for a third cup of coffee, but deep down, you know that’s just a temporary fix for a foundational problem.
Most people call this the "afternoon slump" and accept it as the tax for being a high-performer. They push through, grinding their gears until 5:00 PM, producing mediocre work and draining their battery to zero.
But you? You aren't "most people."
As a Veteran and a leader, I know that excellence isn't about how many hours you sit at a desk… it’s about the quality of the energy you bring to those hours. If you want to step into the version of yourself capable of leading a legacy, you have to master your biology.
Today, we are talking about the 16:44 Focus Method: the ultimate tactical reset for your afternoon.
The Biology of the Slump: It’s Not You, It’s Your Rhythm
Before we fix the problem, you need to understand why it’s happening. You aren't lazy. You aren't unmotivated. You are human.
Around 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, your body undergoes a predictable biological shift. Your core body temperature dips. Your cortisol: the "get up and go" hormone: starts to taper off. Meanwhile, adenosine (the chemical that tracks how long you’ve been awake) has been building up in your brain since you opened your eyes.
When these factors collide, your brain enters a secondary "sleep window." It wants to rest. If you fight this with brute force, you lose. If you Shyft your strategy to work with it, you win.

Introducing the 16:44 Focus Method
We don't need a three-hour nap to reset. We need a tactical, intentional intervention. I call this the 16:44 Focus Method. It’s a one-hour cycle designed to Regulate, Rebuild, and then Rise.
The math is simple: 16 minutes of Reset + 44 minutes of Deep Focus.
Why 16 minutes? Because in less than twenty minutes, you can physically and neurologically flip the switch from "drained" to "driven." Why 44 minutes? Because research shows that the human brain can maintain peak concentration for about 45-50 minutes before performance begins to decay.
By using this 60-minute block, you aren't just working; you are performing.
Phase 1: The 16-Minute Reset (Regulate & Rebuild)
This isn't a "scrolling on Instagram" break. This is a somatic and mental intervention. You have 16 minutes to tell your nervous system that the mission isn't over.
- Movement (5 Minutes): Get out of your chair. Do air squats, stretch, or take a brisk walk around the office. Movement increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain, flushing out that "brain fog."
- Hydration & Nutrition (3 Minutes): Skip the sugar. Drink 16 ounces of water. If you need a snack, reach for protein or healthy fats. Stabilize your blood sugar; don't spike it.
- Breathwork & Mindset (5 Minutes): Use box breathing or a quick somatic reset. Visualize the "Role Model" version of yourself: the one who is calm, focused, and authoritative. This is a micro-version of my 34-Minute Mindful Method.
- The Environment Shyft (3 Minutes): Clear your desk. Close unnecessary tabs. Put your phone in another room.
Phase 2: The 44-Minute Performance Phase (Rise)
Now that you’ve regulated your system, it’s time to execute. This is where you enter the "Excellent Version" of your workday.
- One Goal: Pick the one task that requires the most cognitive "heavy lifting."
- Zero Distractions: No emails. No Slack. No "just checking" anything.
- High Energy: Because you just finished a 16-minute reset, you are entering this block with a fresh tank.
If you find yourself struggling to stay consistent with these deep work blocks, you might need a "Crew" to keep you accountable. We do this live in our Beyond Limits Power Hour co-working sessions.

Why This Matters for Your Leadership
Every time you choose to reset instead of "pushing through," you are practicing self-leadership. You are proving to yourself that you value the quality of your output more than the quantity of your busy-work.
This is how you live in the potential you know you are capable of. It’s about taking ownership of your energy. When you show up to your 4:00 PM meeting or your family dinner with clarity instead of exhaustion… you are being the role model your team and your family deserve.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do the 16:44 Method more than once?
Absolutely. For a high-impact afternoon, I recommend running two cycles back-to-back. Reset for 16, work for 44, then repeat. It allows you to maintain peak performance for two full hours without the typical end-of-day crash.
What if I can’t leave my desk for the 16-minute reset?
Even if you can’t walk away, you can change your state. Stand up, do some desk stretches, drink water, and practice 2 minutes of deep belly breathing. The goal is a physiological "Shyft," not necessarily a change in geography.
Is this better than a power nap?
A 20-minute power nap is great for sleep debt, but the 16:44 method is specifically designed for performance. It bridges the gap between wellness and work, ensuring you don't wake up from a nap feeling groggy (sleep inertia).

Step Into Your Excellence
The afternoon slump is a choice. You can choose to be a victim of your biology, or you can choose to lead it.
Start today. Set a timer for 16 minutes. Move. Breathe. Hydrate. Then, give yourself 44 minutes of uninterrupted, high-level focus. See how it feels to operate as the person you know you can be.
