It’s 4:44 PM. Your brain feels like it’s been through a paper shredder, your inbox is still screaming, and that "second wind" everyone talks about is nowhere to be found.
You’ve got two choices. You can white-knuckle your way through the final hour, producing mediocre work and showing up to dinner as a shell of yourself… or you can take the 16:44 Reset.
In the world of high-performance leadership, we don’t just "push through." We Shyft.
As a Veteran, I learned early on that your ability to lead others is entirely dependent on your ability to lead yourself. And self-leadership starts with how you handle the "afternoon slump." The version of you that finishes the day strong is the version that builds a legacy. The version of you that caves to the fog is just spinning wheels.
If you’re ready to step into the excellent version of yourself: the one who dominates the day instead of just surviving it: use these five 16:44 Reset tips to reclaim your focus instantly.
1. The Liquid Shyft: Tactical Hydration
Most people reach for a fourth cup of coffee at 4:44 PM. That’s a mistake. By late afternoon, your brain isn't lacking caffeine; it’s likely lacking oxygen and hydration. Even a 2% drop in hydration can lead to a massive decline in cognitive function and decision-making speed.
When you feel that focus slipping, don't go for the stimulant. Go for the fuel. A large glass of water: ideally with a pinch of sea salt or electrolytes: tells your nervous system that the "drought" is over. It’s a physical signal to Regulate.
As you drink, don't just gulp it down while staring at your screen. Stand up. Look away from the blue light. Feel the water hitting your system. This isn't just about thirst; it's about a conscious decision to fuel the vehicle that carries your vision. 2. The Command Walk: Regulate to Rise

Movement is the fastest way to change your state. If you’ve been sitting in your C-suite or home office for three hours straight, your energy is stagnant. You aren't "focusing"; you're just staring.
The 16:44 Command Walk isn't a leisure stroll. It’s a 10-minute tactical movement session. Get outside if you can, but if you’re stuck in the office, do a lap around the floor.
The Goal: Increase blood flow and reset your posture.
The Shyft: Walk with the intention of the person you want to be. Shoulders back. Chest open. Eyes on the horizon, not your feet.
This is where you move from the "survivor" mindset into the Role Model Mindset. You are literally walking yourself out of the fog and into clarity. By the time you get back to your desk, your nervous system has been recalibrated. You’ve regulated your body so you can rebuild your focus.
3. The 4-4 Tactical Breath
In the military, we used breathwork to stay calm under pressure. In the corporate world, you use it to stay sharp under the weight of a deadline.
The "16:44 Reset" wouldn't be complete without a 3-minute breath block. Try the 4-4-4-4 method:
- Inhale for 4 counts.
- Hold for 4 counts.
- Exhale for 4 counts.
- Hold empty for 4 counts.
This isn't "woo-woo" meditation; it’s biology. It triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering your cortisol and allowing your prefrontal cortex: the part of your brain responsible for leadership and logic: to come back online.
When you master your breath, you master your response. This is a foundational piece of the Executive Coaching I provide. We don't just talk about strategy; we talk about the internal state required to execute that strategy.
4. The 34 Minute Mindful Method (The Lite Version)

I built the 34 Minute Mindful Method to help busy high-achievers align their identity, body, and purpose. At 4:44 PM, you don't need the full 34 minutes, but you do need the core principle: Living in your potential.
Take five minutes to ask yourself: “What would the most excellent version of me do for the next 60 minutes?”
Does that person scroll through social media? No.
Does that person complain about being tired? No.
That person picks the highest-leverage task and attacks it with precision.
Use this time to align your current actions with your future self. If you feel like your daily habits are out of alignment with the leader you know you are, take the Life Alignment Quiz to see exactly where the gap is.
5. The Single-Task Sprint
The biggest focus-killer at the end of the day is "context switching." You try to answer an email, check Slack, and finish a report all at once. It’s a recipe for burnout.
To finish your 16:44 Reset, you must declare The Final Sprint.
- Close every tab that isn't essential to the ONE task you need to finish.
- Put your phone on Do Not Disturb.
- Set a timer for 25 minutes.
- Work with total, unshakeable intensity until that timer goes off.
When you work this way, you aren't just getting things done; you're proving to yourself that you are the captain of your attention. You are taking ownership. You are leading.
Step Into Your Potential
The 16:44 Reset isn't just about focus: it's about Identity. It's about refusing to settle for a "good enough" finish to your day. You know you are capable of more. You know there is a version of you that is more vibrant, more powerful, and more present.
Stop waiting for "someday" to be that person. Step into them now. Regulate your state, rebuild your focus, and rise to the occasion.
If you’re ready to take this to the next level and truly shyft your leadership and life, I’m here to help you bridge that gap. Let's stop playing small and start living in the potential you know you have.
