Life just hit the fan, didn’t it?
When Shyft hits the fan, are you shrinking… or stepping up?
Maybe it was a divorce that left the house feeling too quiet. Maybe it was a retirement that made your "Veteran" status feel more like a question mark than a badge of honor. Or maybe you finally reached the top of the mountain only to realize you’re on the wrong peak.
Whatever it is, the ground beneath you has moved. The old version of you is gone, and the new one hasn't quite moved in yet. You’re in the "Messy Middle."
But here’s the truth: Shyft Happens™.
As The Shyft Master™, I’ve seen this story a thousand times. I’ve lived it myself: going from a wheelchair to running 27 marathons. I know what it’s like when your identity gets stripped away. But I also know how to navigate the "Shyft Zone" and come out on the other side not just surviving, but thriving.
It’s time to stop panicking and start navigating.
The "Y" Factor: Why It’s Always a Shyft
You’ll notice I don’t spell it with an "i." Why? Because a "Shyft" starts with Y.
YOU.
YOUR WHY.
Change is something that happens to you. A Shyft is something you lead. It’s the crossroads of change where you decide that "Y" is the most important factor in the equation. When life forces a transformation, you have a choice: you can let the change define you, or you can use it to rewrite your story in real time.
Ready to stop spinning? Let’s break down the logic of the Shyft.
Phase 1: Regulate (Stop the Bleeding)
When Shyft hits the fan, your nervous system usually goes into overdrive. You’re in fight-or-flight. You’re making decisions based on fear, scarcity, and "what if."
Before you can rebuild, you have to Regulate.
You cannot strategize a new life while your body thinks it’s being chased by a tiger. Regulating means bringing your nervous system back to a baseline of safety. It’s about grounded authority.
How do you do it?
- Acknowledge the Mess: Don't pretend it's fine. It's messy. Let it be messy.
- The 34-Minute Mindset: Start small. 2 minutes of gratitude in the morning, 30 minutes of movement, and 2 minutes of reflection at night. That’s only 2% of your day. Give yourself that 2%.
- Breathe Through the Pivot: Your breath is the remote control for your brain. Use it.
Once you stop the internal fire, you can actually see the tools in front of you.
Phase 2: Rebuild with the HERO Mindset
Now that you’ve regulated, it’s time to look at the blueprint. To navigate this next chapter, you need more than just a "positive attitude." You need a tactical framework.
I call this the HERO Mindset. When you are the HERO of your own Shyft, you operate with four specific pillars:
- Hope: This isn't wishful thinking. It’s the belief that a better future is possible AND that you have the pathways to get there.
- Efficacy: This is your "I’ve got this" factor. It’s the confidence that you have the skills: or the ability to learn them: to handle what’s coming next.
- Resilience: As a Veteran, I know resilience isn't just about "bouncing back." It’s about bouncing forward. It’s using the trauma and the transition as fuel for the new build.
- Optimism: Seeing the setback as temporary and specific, rather than permanent and all-encompassing.
This mindset is the operating system for your Rebuild. It allows you to look at the wreckage of your old life and see it as raw material for the new one.
Phase 3: Rise (The New Identity)
Regulate → Rebuild → Rise.
This is where the magic happens. This is where you stop talking about what you "used to do" and start owning who you are becoming. This is an Identity Shyft.
Whether you are transitioning out of a career, a marriage, or a mindset that no longer serves you, rising requires you to step into the "Shyft Zone" with courage. You have to be willing to be a beginner again. You have to be willing to be "seen" before you feel ready.
But guess what? You’ll never feel 100% ready. So do it anyway.
Playful truth? Your next chapter is not coming to rescue you… you’re the rescue plan.
Rewrite your narrative in real time. If the old chapter ended, don't just sit there staring at the blank page. Pick up the pen. Your "Why" is waiting for you to lead the way.
Is Your Life Actually Aligned?
Sometimes we think we’re in a crisis when we’re actually just in a misalignment. You can’t build a new chapter on a crooked foundation.
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or just "off," you need to find out where the gap is. Is it your body? Your leadership? Your purpose?
Take the Life Alignment Assessment right now.
It’s the first step in moving from "What now?" to "What’s next." Stop guessing and start assessing.

Don't Navigate the Shyft Alone
Life transitions are heavy, but you don't have to carry them by yourself. Whether you are a corporate executive, a Veteran transitioning to civilian life, or an entrepreneur ready to scale, the "Y" factor is easier to find when you have a tribe.
