The sirens haven't started yet, but you can feel the pressure in the air. In the field, that pressure is a physical weight: a shift in the wind, a silence that’s too loud. In the boardroom, it’s the sudden market drop, the key executive resignation, or the high-stakes negotiation that could make or break your fiscal year.
Most people wait for the crisis to hit before they test their strength. They wait for the storm to start before they check their gear. But if you’re waiting for the chaos to arrive to see what you’re made of… you’ve already lost.
Resilience isn't just a "bounce back" strategy. It isn’t a soft skill you list on a resume to sound flexible. Tactical Resilience is a weapon. It is a disciplined, calculated approach to maintaining high performance when everyone else is falling apart. It is the ability to operate "stronger, faster, and more effectively" because of the adversity, not in spite of it.
As a Veteran, I learned that resilience is built long before the first shot is fired. It’s built in the monotonous drills, the early mornings, and the unwavering commitment to the person standing next to you. Today, we’re taking those lessons from the field and applying them to the boardroom. It’s time to step into the excellent version of yourself and live in the potential you know you are capable of.
The Field vs. The Boardroom: A Shared Reality
Whether you are leading a platoon or a C-suite, the environment is the same: Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous (VUCA). The stakes might change: from lives to livelihoods: but the requirements for leadership remain constant.
Tactical Resilience in business means you don’t just survive a disruption; you use it as a catalyst for a massive Shyft. You don’t just "manage" stress; you regulate it, rebuild your strategy, and rise above the competition.

1. Situational Awareness: Identifying "The Y Factor"
In the military, situational awareness (SA) is the difference between life and death. It’s the ability to perceive what’s happening, understand its meaning, and project what will happen next. In leadership, SA is about seeing the "Y Factor": the "YOU" and "YOUR WHY" behind every decision.
When the pressure mounts, most leaders develop tunnel vision. They focus so hard on the problem that they lose sight of the landscape. Tactical Resilience requires you to zoom out.
- Perception: What is actually happening? (Cut through the noise and the ego).
- Comprehension: What does this mean for our mission and our people?
- Projection: Where is this heading if we don't act now?
To maintain this, you must be the Role Model Mindset in action. You cannot lead others through a crisis if you haven't first led yourself. This starts with foundational self-building. Are you grounded? Are you clear? Or are you reacting out of fear?
2. Adaptive Decision Making: The Art of the Shyft
The best plan rarely survives first contact with the enemy: or the market. Tactical Resilience is about the Shyft. Notice I didn't say "shift." A "Shyft" is intentional. It represents a pivot that is aligned with your core purpose.
In the boardroom, this looks like "options-based" strategy. You don't marry yourself to a single path. You create a framework that allows you to detect threats early and withstand them without breaking. This is where your potential meets your preparation.
When a crisis hits, use the Regulate → Rebuild → Rise framework:
- Regulate: Calm the nervous system. You can’t make a tactical decision in a state of panic. This is where the 34 Minute Mindful Method becomes your secret weapon.
- Rebuild: Assess the new landscape and re-allocate your resources. What do we have? What do we need?
- Rise: Execute with direct, powerful authority.

Building a Culture of Resilience
As a Veteran, I know that individual resilience is only half the battle. A leader’s job is to institutionalize resilience within their team. You want an organization that absorbs shocks and emerges stronger.
The Servant Leadership Code
Resilient teams are built on trust and psychological safety. This isn't "woo" talk; it's tactical. If your team is afraid to report a "near miss" because they fear retribution, you are flying blind.
- Underwrite honest mistakes: Encourage calculated risks. If a team member fails while pursuing excellence, that is a learning opportunity, not a firing offense.
- Extreme Ownership: As the leader, you own the climate. If the team is brittle, look in the mirror. Are you modeling the resilience you expect?
- The Y Factor in Teams: Help your people connect their daily tasks to the larger "WHY." When people know their purpose, they can withstand almost any "how."
The Physicality of Resilience
You cannot have a high-performance boardroom presence if your body is failing you. Tactical Resilience is holistic. My 34-minute mindset isn't just about meditation; it's about the synergy between the Identity, the Body, the Leadership, and the Purpose.
Stress is a physical load. If you aren't training your body to handle the cortisol, your brain will eventually fog, and your decisions will suffer. This is why I advocate for a "tactical luxury" lifestyle: one where wellness is not an afterthought, but a foundational requirement for authority.

Stepping Into Your Potential
The gap between who you are and who you know you are capable of being is where Tactical Resilience lives. It’s the discipline to keep showing up when the "feeling" of motivation has left the building.
It's time to stop playing small. It's time to stop letting "stress" be an excuse for mediocre leadership. You are a Role Model. Your team, your family, and your community are looking to you to see how a person of character handles the heat.
Are you ready to Shyft?
The Veteran’s Code to High Performance isn't for everyone. It’s for those who are tired of the "scarcity" mindset and are ready to take full ownership of their evolution. It’s for those who want to lead with grit, grace, and grounded authority.
