It’s 4:00 PM. You’ve been grinding since sunrise. The caffeine from your third cup of coffee has worn off, your inbox is a battlefield, and your brain feels like it’s operating with forty-seven open tabs: most of which are frozen.
Most people at this hour start looking at the clock, counting down the minutes until they can "clock out" and slide into a reactive evening of Netflix and takeout. They let the day finish them.
But you aren't most people. You are a high performer. You are a leader. You are a Role Model. And as a Veteran, I know that the way you finish the mission determines the success of the next one.
Welcome to the 16:44 Reset.
This isn't just an afternoon break. It’s a tactical "Shyft" in your identity. It’s the intentional pause at 4:44 PM that separates the version of you that is exhausted by work from the version of you that is energized for life.
If you want to live in the potential you know you are capable of, you have to master the transition. Here is your 101 guide to the 16:44 Reset and how to finish every day in a position of power.
Why 16:44? The Power of the Third Quarter
In military and athletic circles, we talk about the "Third Quarter" or the "Home Stretch." 4:44 PM (16:44 in military time) represents that pivotal moment. It’s late enough that the primary workday is winding down, but early enough that you still have the agency to dictate how your evening begins.
The "44" is a nod to the alignment and stability required to lead yourself. When you hit this timestamp, you aren't just finishing tasks; you are Regulating your system, Rebuilding your energy, and Rising into your evening identity.
This is where you execute the "Y Factor": focusing on your why and your well-being before the world asks for another piece of you.
Step 1: Regulate – The Great Nervous System Decompression
The biggest mistake high-achieving executives make is carrying the stress of the boardroom into the living room. You can’t be the excellent version of yourself for your family or your personal growth if you’re still vibrating with the tension of a 2:00 PM conflict.
At 16:44, the first move is to Regulate.
This is a 4-minute physiological "stop-loss."
- Box Breathing: 4 seconds in, 4 seconds hold, 4 seconds out, 4 seconds hold. Do this for four rounds.
- The Brain Dump: Spend two minutes writing down every "unfinished" thought or task. Don't solve them. Just get them out of your head and onto paper (or into your Life Alignment Assessment notes).
- Physical Release: Stand up. Shake out your limbs. Literally "shake off" the workday.
By regulating your nervous system, you stop the cortisol spike from following you home. You’re telling your body: The work mission is ending. The life mission is beginning.

Step 2: Rebuild – The 16-Minute Energy Shyft
Once you’ve regulated, it’s time to Rebuild. This is the heart of the reset.
In my 34 Minute Mindful Method, we talk about movement as medicine. In the 16:44 Reset, we use a condensed 16-minute window to Shyft your physical state.
Why 16 minutes? Because it’s enough to change your blood chemistry but short enough that you have zero excuses.
- 8 Minutes of Movement: This isn't a full gym session. It’s a high-intensity burst or a purposeful stretch. Think air squats, planks, or a brisk walk around the block. You want to get your heart rate up just enough to signal to your brain that you are alive, capable, and in control.
- 8 Minutes of Mindset: Listen to a high-frequency podcast, read two pages of a personal development book, or sit in silence and visualize the person you want to be when you walk through your front door.
This is about self-leadership. You are taking ownership of your energy. You aren't waiting for the weekend to feel good; you are rebuilding your "Role Model Mindset" right now.
Step 3: Rise – Intentional Evening Integration
The final piece of the 16:44 Reset is the Rise.
Most people "stumble" into their evenings. They walk in the door, drop their keys, and immediately start reacting to the needs of others: kids, partners, chores.
To Rise, you must set an intention for the next four hours.
Ask yourself: Who needs me at 100% tonight?
Is it your children? Is it your creative project? Is it your own body that needs a nutritious meal and a disciplined sleep routine?
When you decide how you will show up before you get there, you eliminate the decision fatigue that leads to poor choices later. This is how you bridge the gap between high-level leadership and holistic wellness. You are leading yourself first so you can lead others better.

Small Disciplines, Extraordinary Results
The 16:44 Reset works because it’s a small, daily discipline. As a Veteran, I’ve seen how consistency in the small things leads to victory in the big things.
If you do this reset once, you’ll have a slightly better Tuesday. If you do it every day for a month, you will find yourself with more energy, less burnout, and a sense of "stepping into the excellent version of yourself" that you’ve been chasing for years.
You don't need more time; you need more intention.
This is about living in the potential you know you are capable of. It’s about taking the "Y Factor" (YOU and YOUR WHY) and making it non-negotiable.
Stop Sliding. Start Shyfting.
If you’ve been feeling like you’re constantly "behind" or that your professional success is costing you your personal peace, it’s time for a change. The 16:44 Reset is your tactical entry point into a life of alignment.
Don't let another day just "end." Take command of the transition.
If you’re ready to take this deeper and see how your life currently aligns with your highest potential, take the Life Alignment Assessment. It’s the first step in moving from "getting by" to truly Thriving.
