The Excellence Gap: Bridging Who You Are with Who You Can Be

There is a gap. A wide, uncomfortable, and often frustrating space between who you see in the mirror today and the powerhouse you know you were born to be.

You feel it in the quiet moments between meetings. You feel it when you look at your results and realize you’ve been playing at 60% capacity while your potential is screaming for 100. That space is the Excellence Gap. And if you’re reading this, you’re likely tired of just staring across it.

Welcome to Day 4 of our 7-Day Role Model Mindset & Self-Building Series. If you’ve been following along, we’ve laid the groundwork for your evolution. Today, we are building the bridge. We aren't just talking about "becoming better." We are talking about stepping into the excellent version of yourself that already exists, the one waiting for you to take ownership.

The Reality of the Gap

Most people treat their potential like a destination they’ll eventually reach through luck or "someday" effort. But excellence isn't a place you arrive at; it’s a standard you live by.

The gap exists because of a mismatch between your current habits and your future identity. To bridge it, you must stop identifying with your limitations and start operating from your future self’s perspective. This is the core of the Role Model Mindset. A Role Model doesn't wait for permission to lead. A Role Model leads themselves first, so they are worthy of being followed by others.

Whether you are a corporate executive, an entrepreneur, or a Veteran transitioning into a new theater of life, the challenge is the same: You must close the distance between your "now" and your "next."

Regulate: The Foundation of the Bridge

You cannot build a bridge on shaky ground. Most people fail to close the Excellence Gap because they are operating in a constant state of survival. Their nervous systems are fried, their bodies are neglected, and their minds are cluttered.

Before you can Rise, you must Regulate.

This is why I advocate for the 34 Minute Mindful Method. It’s not just a workout; it’s a strategic recalibration. In those 34 minutes, you are telling your body and mind that you are in control. You are regulating your stress response so you can think clearly and lead effectively.

When you regulate, you move from a state of reaction to a state of intention. You stop being a victim of your circumstances and start being the architect of your day. If you want to bridge the gap to your highest potential, your physical and mental health are non-negotiable. You cannot lead an organization if you cannot lead your own biology.

Rebuild: The Shyft in Identity

The "Y" in Shyft stands for YOU and YOUR WHY.

Bridging the Excellence Gap requires a radical rebuilding of your identity. Most of us are carrying around old scripts, narratives about what we can’t do, what we aren’t good at, or why we aren’t "ready."

To move across the bridge, you have to leave those scripts on the other side. This is where you audit your life. Are your current associations, habits, and self-talk aligned with the person who has already achieved what you want?

If the answer is no, it’s time to Rebuild.

This isn't about "fixing" what’s broken. It’s about clearing out the clutter of mediocrity to make room for the excellence that is already within you. It’s about taking the Life Alignment Assessment and being brutally honest about where you are out of sync. When your actions align with your identity, the gap starts to vanish.

Rise: The Y Factor in Leadership

Once you’ve regulated your foundation and rebuilt your identity, you are ready to Rise.

Leadership is the natural byproduct of self-mastery. When you show up as the excellent version of yourself, you give everyone around you permission to do the same. This is the Role Model Mindset in action. You aren't just telling people what to do; you are showing them what is possible.

The Excellence Gap is often widest in our leadership. We expect excellence from our teams while settling for "good enough" in our own discipline. We demand resilience from our organizations while avoiding the hard conversations in our own lives.

To bridge this, you must apply The Y Factor. Why does your leadership matter? Who are you becoming for the sake of those you serve? Whether I’m working with a CEO in a one-on-one Executive Coaching session or training a group of high-performers, the message is the same: ownership is the only bridge.

Tactical Steps to Close the Gap Today

I don’t believe in "woo" or abstract concepts that don't produce results. If you want to bridge the gap between who you are and who you can be, you need tactical, doable steps.

  1. Audit Your Standards: Look at your calendar, your diet, and your bank statement. Do they reflect a person of excellence or a person of convenience? Convenience is the enemy of the potential you know you are capable of.
  2. Commit to the 34: Start your day with the 34 Minute Mindful Method. Stop negotiating with yourself. If you can’t commit to 34 minutes for your own growth, you aren't ready for the "excellent" version of your life yet.
  3. Find Your Tribe: You cannot bridge the gap alone. Surround yourself with people who are also on the path to their highest selves. Join our Free THRIVE Community to connect with others who refuse to settle.
  4. Get a Direct Assessment: Stop guessing where the holes in your bridge are. Take the Life Alignment Quiz and see exactly where you are leaking energy and potential.
