You’re winning at work, so why does your personal life feel like it’s falling apart?

It’s a hard moment. You’ve spent years, maybe decades, building the career, growing the business, and showing everyone you can handle a lot. You are a leader. You are driven. You are making things happen. But somewhere along the way, you may have started getting lost in your job.

We wear our titles like armor. But what happens when that armor gets so heavy that you forget who you are underneath it?

That’s where burnout starts. And if you’re not careful, success at work can come at the cost of your peace at home.

The Athlete’s Shadow: A Lesson in Transformation

I learned this lesson the hard way, long before I ever stepped into a boardroom.

For years, I knew myself by what I did. I was an athlete. I was a performer. I was a 26-time marathoner, an NFL cheerleader, and a professional dancer. Later, I was also Air Force. For 22 years, that uniform gave me structure, purpose, and a clear sense of who I was. I knew how to show up. I knew how to push. I knew how to perform. And if I’m being honest, I started to believe that my value came from always doing, always achieving, always being strong.

But life changes. The stage lights dim. The season ends. And two years ago, I retired from the military. I took off the uniform… literally and emotionally. That shift hit me deeply. Because when you’ve been known one way for so long, it can feel strange and even scary to ask, Who am I now?

I wasn’t just moving from Air Force life. I was moving through a whole lot of change. From athlete to leader. From life in uniform to everyday life. From being constantly needed as Mom to walking into an empty nest and feeling the quiet in a whole new way. And let me tell you… that kind of change can mess with your heart if you’re not grounded in who you are beyond the role.

That realization was painful. I had tied so much of my worth to what I could do. And if I’m being real, it wasn’t just about sports or the military. It showed up again in divorce, when I had to face no longer being "wife." And for so many women, it shows up again in motherhood. One day you are needed for everything as Mom. Your days are full. Your house is loud. Your heart is wrapped around everyone else. Then one day the house gets quiet. The kids grow up. The routine changes. And you’re left asking, Who am I now?

That’s the pattern. Athlete. Air Force. Wife. Mom. CEO. Different roles. Different seasons. Some we choose. Some we don’t. But any one of them can become a problem when we start believing the role is all we are.

I see this all the time in the executives and entrepreneurs I coach. The title changes to CEO, Founder, or Director, but the struggle stays the same. You can be a massive success in business and career while your home life is strained and your inner peace is gone. You can look amazing on paper and still feel empty in real life.

And that’s the wake-up call.

Burnout isn’t always just about doing too much. Sometimes it’s about forgetting who you are outside of what you do. When that happens, a hard week at work feels personal. A setback in business feels like you are the failure. And it doesn’t stay at work. It follows you home. It shows up in your relationships, your rest, your patience, and your peace.

The truth is, titles are just roles we carry for a season. They matter. They can be meaningful. But they are not your whole identity.

So how do you build success in your house, career, and business without losing yourself along the way?

Step 1: Reclaim the "34-Minute Mindset"

Change doesn’t have to start with a huge life makeover. It can start with a small pocket of time that belongs to you. I call this the 34-minute mindset.

Whether it’s a high-energy fitness session or a quiet moment to breathe and think, you need something in your day that reminds you that you matter too. Not because of what you produce. Not because of what you fix for everyone else. Just because you’re you. Let’s make that a reality starting tomorrow morning.

Step 2: Audit Your Language

Listen to how you talk about yourself. Do you say, "I am a CEO," or "I lead a company"? It may sound small, but it matters. One makes the job your whole identity. The other reminds you it’s something you do, not all that you are.

You are the person who holds the title. You are not the title itself. That simple shift can help you lead with strength without letting work define your worth.

Step 3: Seek a "Revival" (Not Just a Vacation)

Most leaders wait until they are completely worn down before they get away. But a vacation is often just a short break from the pressure. What you may really need is a reset.

You need to be around other high-achieving women who understand the weight you carry but won’t let you hide behind your resume. This is why I created the Revive & Thrive Retreats. It’s about setting the title down for a minute and reconnecting with the woman underneath.

When you sit in a circle of sisterhood, whether it’s in the heart of the Puerto Rican rainforest or a corporate boardroom, and realize you are not the only one carrying this, something shifts. You remember that you’re allowed to be vulnerable. You remember that you’re allowed to be whole.

Impact Comes from Wholeness

Cindy Witteman’s mission with FORCE Magazine is to showcase the good in the world. But here is the truth: you can’t keep showing up for everyone else if you are running on empty.

The world doesn’t need more exhausted leaders. It needs more grounded, fully alive leaders.

It needs leaders who can step onto a speaking stage with power because they know who they are, not just what they’ve achieved. It needs entrepreneurs who build success in their house, career, and business, not just one area while the rest falls apart.

Your Challenge for June

As we move into this month, I want to challenge you to ask yourself one simple question: If my business disappeared tomorrow, who would I still be?

If that question scares you, that’s okay. It’s actually a powerful place to begin. It means it may be time to invest in the person behind the professional. It may be time to book a coaching session, take the 23 Alignment Quiz, join the THRIVE Community, connect with me on LinkedIn, or simply take a walk without your phone.

You were valuable long before you had a title. And you will still be valuable long after one season ends.

Let’s level up together, not just in career and business, but in life at home too. Because real success isn’t just what you build… it’s who you become while you’re building it.

Read on, lead well, and remember: You are enough, exactly as you are.
