How to Create a High-Performance Afternoon Reset in Just 5 Minutes

It’s 3:00 PM. You’ve been grinding since sunrise, your inbox is a battlefield, and that third cup of coffee is starting to feel like a lie. Most "high performers" do one of two things: they white-knuckle their way through the brain fog or they surrender to a scroll-hole on social media. Neither of those versions of you is the one who leads with authority. Neither of those versions is a Role Model.

You know there is a more excellent version of yourself waiting on the other side of that slump. But how do you access her when your energy is flagging and your focus is fractured?

You don’t need an hour-long meditation or a mid-day nap. You need a Shyft.

As a Veteran and an executive coach, I’ve seen how the elite maintain their edge. It isn't about working more hours; it’s about how you manage the transitions between those hours. Specifically, it’s about the 16:44 reset: that pivotal moment before the final push of the day where you decide if you’re going to crawl across the finish line or finish with a flourish.

Here is how you can rebuild your momentum in just five minutes using the Regulate → Rebuild → Rise framework.

Why 16:44 Matters

In the world of high-level leadership, timing is everything. I often talk about the 16:44 focus. Why? Because 4:44 PM is the tactical bridge. It’s the moment where most people "check out" mentally even if they are still physically at their desks. By implementing a reset at this time: or whenever your "afternoon wall" hits: you are taking ownership of your identity. You are choosing to step into the potential you know you are capable of, rather than settling for a mediocre finish.

Minute 1: Regulate the Nervous System

High performance is not synonymous with high stress. In fact, if you are operating from a place of "fight or flight," you aren't leading: you’re reacting.

The first minute of your reset is dedicated to regulation. You need to tell your body that it is safe to excel.

  • The Tactical Breath: Close your eyes. Inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for eight. This isn't "woo-woo" fluff; it’s a physiological override that lowers your cortisol and clears the mental clutter.
  • Somatic Check-In: Scan your body. Where are you holding the day's tension? Your jaw? Your shoulders? Release it.

When you regulate your system, you stop the "grind" and start the flow. This is the foundation of foundational self-building. You cannot build a skyscraper on a shaky foundation.

Minutes 2-3: Rebuild Your Mental Focus

Once your body is calm, your mind can be sharp. Most people feel overwhelmed in the afternoon because they have fifty open "tabs" in their brain.

To Rebuild, you must practice the Shyft. The "Y" in Shyft stands for YOU and YOUR WHY.

  • The Brain Dump: Spend sixty seconds writing down every "to-do" that is currently nagging at you. Get it out of your head and onto the paper.
  • Alignment Check: Look at that list. Does it align with the excellent version of yourself? If you’re struggling to see the connection, it’s time for a Life Alignment Assessment.

Ask yourself: Is what I am doing right now leading me toward my potential, or am I just busy? High performers don't do everything; they do the right things. This is where Executive Coaching becomes a game-changer: learning to filter the noise so you can focus on the signal.

Minutes 4-5: Rise Into Your Role Model Identity

The final two minutes are about activation. You’ve regulated your body and rebuilt your focus. Now, it’s time to Rise. This is where you step into your Role Model Mindset.

  • Identity Statement: Speak it out loud. "I am a leader who finishes strong." or "I am the excellent version of myself in this moment."
  • Micro-Movement: Stand up. Stretch. Do ten air squats or walk to the window. Change your physical state to change your mental state.
  • The One Thing: Identify the single most important task for the remainder of your day. Not five tasks. One. Commit to finishing it with the excellence of a Veteran.

This 5-minute process is a condensed version of my 34 Minute Mindful Method. It’s a daily commitment to putting your health and your mindset first so that you can show up for everyone else from a place of overflow, not depletion.

Living in Your Potential

You are capable of far more than you are currently giving yourself credit for. The gap between where you are and where you want to be isn't a lack of talent: it’s a lack of consistent resets. When you take five minutes to ground yourself, you aren't just "taking a break." You are practicing self-leadership. You are taking ownership of your energy and your results.

Don't wait for the weekend to "recover." Don't wait for the new year to "start over." The Shyft happens in the small, intentional moments. It happens at 16:44. It happens right now.

If you’re ready to stop the grind and start rising into the leader you were meant to be, let’s talk. Whether you’re looking for Leadership Training for your team or a personal Executive Coaching relationship, the path to excellence starts with a single decision.

Step into the potential you know you are capable of. The world is waiting for the excellent version of you.
